Modern high-quality antifreeze systems, including NORD antifreeze, include three main components:
🔺Demineralized (distilled) water, as the best natural heat carrier. However, it freezes at low temperatures. The distilled water content in antifreeze is about 48-49%.
🔺Ethylene glycol (mono-ethylene glycol, MEG, glycol) is a spirit with an operating range up to — 40 °C when mixed with water. At lower temperatures, the water and MEG mixture does not expand like ice and protects the cooling system from thawing even under extremely low temperatures. The MEG content in antifreeze is also about 48-49%.
🔺The additive package is a complex mixture of salts and acids. It is an essential component that ultimately differentiates one antifreeze from another. The additives protect the cooling system materials (metals, plastics, polymers) from corrosion and destruction, as MEG and water are corrosively aggressive. The additive package makes only 3.5% of the antifreeze weight, but these 3.5% fully determine its properties.
🔺Colorant is an addition that affects only the liquid color. It does not affect the antifreeze properties or composition. Antifreeze liquids with the same composition can appear in various colors, while incompatible formulations can be the same color.
🔺A fluorescent additive, like the one in the NORD antifreeze, helps reveal a coolant leakage when illuminated by the ultraviolet lamp.
