How to Refill the Coolant Properly

Every driver should know how to refill the coolant. This is required when the coolant level is decreasing. The insufficient fluid causes a risk of overheating the engine that can cause severe damage to the engine parts. When refilling the antifreeze, one should do it correctly, considering the type of coolant and following the procedure. Here, we will talk about how to refill the coolant properly.

Antifreeze is a special liquid that can remove heat and thus cool a heated engine. Due to a low freezing temperature, this process is efficient in a wide range of temperatures. This is possible due to an optimal ratio of water and alcohol in the antifreeze. In turn, the additives ensure protection of the car parts from corrosion thanks to corrosion inhibitors.

Choosing an antifreeze as a replacement

When there is an antifreeze leak, you may think it is enough to buy a similar cooling liquid and refill the system for further use. However, this decision is not correct. The decision should be made on a case-by-case basis.

Before filling the antifreeze, you should find two reasons for the leakage to solve the problem. First, if you are sure there was a leak, you can refill the antifreeze recommended in the car manual. If the coolant has evaporated, add only distilled water.

Ideally, if you need to refill the coolant, you can only use the coolant recommended by the car manufacturer or the one filled earlier. Failure to comply with this recommendation may cause a cooling system malfunction. However, if more than 30% of the total volume is missing or you do not know which antifreeze has been used, better fill in the whole system with a new liquid.

Types of antifreeze differ in composition, not color, as many mistakenly think. So, carboxylate-type antifreeze can be mixed with carboxylate and hybrid-type with a hybrid. However, it is strictly forbidden to mix different types of coolants. Today, ready-to-fill antifreeze and concentrates are available. Do not confuse them, because the concentrate cannot be used undiluted, according to the package instructions.
